Marostica, situated 2 km from Bassano del Grappa, is famous for its castle and walls that overlook the town from the top of the hill.
Rich in history, both the “Castello Superiore” and the “Castello Inferiore” can still be visited.
But Marostica is not known only for its castle and walls and its unique and particular “Chess-Square” is well known all over the world. Once every two years and only on even years, Marostica goes back to its oldest origins and a Chess Match takes place on the the magnificent “Chess-Square”. Here lives again the story of the beautiful daughter of Lord Marostica and the two noblemen Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, that challenge the hand of Lionora. More than 600 walk-ons in typical medieval costumes represent the “gamepieces” on a live chess board match.
